Roma underground

We did a walking tour of underground Rome on Monday afternoon, which was fascinating, but we weren't allowed to take pictures! The parts that were above ground ended up being a nice walk through Roma and Trastavere (south of the river), so here are a few of my favorites from this day.

Most of the places our guide took us were underneath churches, where streets, frescoes and homes from thousands of years ago have been well-preserved and largely forgotten. They've been buried by the Romans that came after them, who just built their homes on top. Very cool, and a little eerie. At one point we saw an actual sarcophogus full of human bones. I actually did get a picture of that, but decided to spare you guys.

We ended up in Trastavere, so we had dinner there and watched the sun set. Another really lovely evening in bella Roma!
